What is AdBlue Crystallisation?

These problems, (along with EGR & DPF issues) can be very troublesome and expensive to fix. The crystallisation issue is a growing problem and cold weather will only lead to more issues.

Crystallisation in the AdBlue system happens when the exhaust gases are not hot enough to react properly with AdBlue. The AdBlue does not completely turn into ammonia.

When this happens, cyanuric crystals can form which can contaminate the system and block the AdBlue injector, eventually affecting the running of the vehicle.

Comon faults include:

• AdBlue contamination: Contaminated AdBlue can cause the AdBlue system to malfunction.
• AdBlue tank sensor issue: The sensor may not be working properly, causing the system to think the tank is empty when it’s full.
• AdBlue freezing: AdBlue can freeze and expand, damaging the system.
• AdBlue quality: Using the wrong quality AdBlue can cause problems. It’s important to use AdBlue that matches your engine’s specifications.
• AdBlue pump failure: Misuse of the system can cause the dosing modules and injectors to fail prematurely.
• AdBlue run out: If the AdBlue runs out, you won’t be able to restart the car until the levels are restored.
• Catalytic converter damage: Using cheap AdBlue can damage the catalytic converter, which can be expensive to repair or replace.
